No more annual fee waiver for Standard Chartered Bank credit cards

Published on May 17, 2025

I’ve been a loyal customer for over a decade, using the bank from trading to mortgage, and eventually becoming their priority customer.

I have the Spree credit card, which was originally the Singpost card back in 2016.

Every year, I would use the SCB app and go to services, and apply for annual fee waiver amounting to $196.20 – totally very convenient!

But today, that failed with the message:

You are not eligible for this request. To avoid incurring further charges, please arrange for the necessary payment to be made as soon as possible.

Oh no. I chatted online with an agent, and confirmed they don’t waive it anymore.

The reason is along the lines of:

For years customers have enjoyed free annual fee waiver, it’s time to pay up.

How to cancel credit card

So, if you’re holding a SCB credit card, take note of the change in waiver policy. And cancel the card when they charge a fee.

They will refund the annual fee after you cancel, since the fee is paid in advance for the year.

Some notes:

  • Pay off all outstanding + unbilled - annual fee
  • When all pending transaction are confirmed, let customer service know you are canceling
  • If you have GIRO, take the business elsewhere

Let’s move on, as always 😄
