I was so hyped to start using my new iPhone Duo today. I started with direct phone-to-phone transfer, but it wouldn’t complete. There was no error message explaining why.
The Duo was running iOS 27.1. My old iPhone was already on iOS 27.2 RC, the release candidate. The brand-new phone was behind the one I was replacing.
Trying to restore a backup revealed the problem: it had been made on a newer version of iOS. That mismatch likely explains why the direct transfer couldn’t complete either.
So much for unboxing it and getting straight to the fun part.
I’m choosing iCloud
My other concern was whether iCloud would leave behind third-party app data that a direct transfer would preserve.
For backed-up or synced third-party app data, there’s no meaningful difference between iCloud, direct transfer, and an encrypted Mac backup. So I’m choosing iCloud for convenience.
| Method | Why I’d choose it | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud restore | Convenient with a fresh backup and reliable Wi-Fi | Needs enough cloud storage; apps and synced content still need to download |
| Direct iPhone transfer | Moves current data from the old phone without relying on an existing cloud backup | Both phones stay occupied until the transfer finishes |
| Encrypted Mac backup | Gives me a separate local recovery copy | Needs a Mac, disk space, and the backup password |
iCloud lets apps and data download in the background after initial setup. I can start using the Duo while that continues, whereas direct transfer keeps both phones occupied until it finishes.
If you use a Mac, enable encryption. Unencrypted backups omit Health, Activity, and Keychain data.
Does iCloud leave app data or passwords behind?
iCloud Backup includes third-party app data, including games and messaging apps. Photos and messages already synced to iCloud return through sync instead. Passwords sync through iCloud Keychain when enabled.
The exceptions are app-specific: excluded data, device-bound credentials, and apps that need their own recovery or registration. No method guarantees every login survives, so check banking apps, authenticators, and wallets before wiping the old phone.
Update to 27.2 RC2, then restart setup
With iCloud decided, I still need to get past the version mismatch. My plan is to update the Duo to iOS 27.2 RC2, then restore my backup.
Setup may offer an update during iCloud restore. If it does, I can continue there. Otherwise, I’ll have to finish setup to update, then erase the Duo to get back to the iCloud restore screen. Erasing its content keeps the updated iOS.
- Choose Don’t Transfer Apps & Data on the Duo and finish minimal setup.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update, check Beta Updates, and install a compatible 27.2 RC2 build when offered.
- After updating, erase only the Duo through Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Keep the eSIM if you’ve already activated it.
- Start setup again, choose From iCloud Backup, and select the old phone’s backup.
I’ll keep the old phone intact and check that its backup and iCloud syncing are up to date before starting.
I’m budgeting a few hours for the update and restore before I can enjoy the Duo. For now, my exciting new phone gets to install software.
